Got Inspiration?

January 3rd and the holidays are finally and officially over! Phew. Moving on…

Now we get down to the work of 2012. How many of you made New Year’s resolutions? And how many of you have already thrown in the towel on those resolutions? Don’t feel bad. I can’t see the raised hands from here but I’m certain there were more than a few. Sticking to resolutions is hard!

When you resolve to change your life or a part of it, it kind of sucks that the world doesn’t stop while you do it. It also doesn’t magically present you with the perfect circumstances to do it in. You’re the same person today as you were yesterday and you’re living the exact same life. Same temptations, same stresses.

I’ve been there a million times myself. It’s hard to stay tuned into the goal and the gusto when nothing else in your life has changed. But when you made that resolution, something in you had changed – your mindset. You were inspired. And if you can find ways to keep that inspiration alive, you’ll be successful. Period. Like they say, mind over matter.

One of my biggest sources of inspiration is music. No matter what my mood or my challenge, I can always find a song to put me in the right frame of mind. When I need to get happy, I’ll hit play on Chicken Fried by the Zac Brown Band or All Summer Long by Kid Rock. When I want to get Zen, Enya does it.

And when I need to change the path of my very existence, my go-to song is Good Life by OneRepublic. The lyrics, the rhythm, the vibe of this song fast-forward me to that space I want to occupy…easy going, laid back, upbeat… As a matter of fact, I’m listening to it on repeat as I’m writing this post!

Another way I connect with inspiration is through meditation. I know. How very New Age of me. But have you tried it? For most human beings, quieting the mind is one of the hardest things to do. It could almost qualify as an Olympic sport! When you do it right though, it feels SO good.

In today’s world, most of us run around like ants in their artificial farms. Unconsciously getting through our days, checking to-do’s off our lists. Time is a scarce commodity, information intake is on overload and we are so focused on the outside world that we forget to even inhabit our own bodies most of the time.

Wait…what?

Think about it. When was the last time you felt connected to your physical body? Felt your feet on the ground, tasted the food in your mouth…

Stop and really think about that.

Now wiggle your fingers and consciously feel them and think about the fact that your brain made that happen. Weird, right? But awesome! Meditation helps you get in that zone. And when you’re there, you’re whole and you’re clear and inspiration positively throws itself at you.

Sometimes though, neither music nor meditation do the trick. For those times, I have my friends. They are a wonderful, weird, eclectic group of individuals who inspire me each and every day. They give me a perspective on life I’d never have on my own. And they believe in me. Doesn’t get any better than that, if you ask me.

(Butterflies and fireflies are pretty inspiring too but that’s a whole other story.)

So, for those of you who are thinking of throwing in the towel on your resolutions or who are settling for what you’ve got because you don’t think you have it in you to get what you want, don’t give up. Get inspired! If you don’t have your own methods, take mine. I’m running a special. Today only! Free for the taking! Well…except my friends. I’d probably have to check with them first.

…Oh, this has gotta be the good life, this has gotta be a good life, this could really be a good life…

Excellent post! Being in the now is very difficult – particularly if you’re always doing what’s needed instead of what you want. Thank you for the reminder 🙂

Thanks! =) I totally hear ya. And I’m with ya. I’ve been on auto-pilot for so long that it’s just a habit now. One that I’m working diligently on breaking!

Wow, truly inspirational ! I’ve had a really rough last part of 2011 and vowed to make more “me” time in 2012 but of course I’m still stuck in my rut. Reading that really energized me ! 🙂
